The Turkey Vulture Migration and Update on the Cookbook

The turkey vulture migration has been coming through our area this week. Today I watched them and counted 36 that passed through.

I was sitting in my porch, soaking up the morning sun and watching the feral kittens playing below the apple bush, when I looked up and saw a vulture circling the air current. Then another joined and then two more. They soared with the current several times and then drifted south until they faded into the horizon.

This repeated several more times within the hour, sometimes just one or two coming in and leaving, sometimes eight or more.

It reminded me of the big migration I’d witnessed ten years ago, right after I moved into this house. It was a significant event for me to see. There were thousands that came through that day. I counted each kettle (they are called a kettle when flying instead of flock) of 50-100 at a time doing the same thing that the smaller kettles did today. It was such a site to see!

(I learned how to count flocks of birds through John Muir Laws’ video, INJW Numbers with Jack. This method really makes it easy to get an estimate of how many birds you’re looking at.)

At the time, it was significant because my divorce was being finalized—death of the life I’d known for nearly 30 years, and the beginning of a new life for me—renewal.

I’m hoping to see more come through in the next few days to weeks.

Last week I finished formatting the new cookbook. We were busy with life stuff, so I didn’t have time to design the covers and will be doing that this week.

Soaring into the week . . .
