Natural Remedies for Sore Throat? Try this Herbal Recipe + Exciting Announcement

As the rich colors of fall dance through the air, there’s a certain magic to the changing season. Crisp mornings, the scent of leaves, and the arrival of cozy sweaters signal that autumn has settled in. Yet, with this beautiful transition comes the arrival of something less welcome—cold and flu season. For children, who seem to mirror the energy of the seasons, this time of year often brings with it sniffles, coughs, and one of the most common ailments: sore throats.

A unique tenderness emerges when caring for a sick child. Their discomfort tugs at your heart, and as a caregiver, you naturally want to offer something comforting, soothing, and safe. For sore throats, the soothing properties of herbs can come to the rescue, gently cooling irritated tissues and easing pain.

Today, I am excited to share an easy-to-make sore throat pastilles recipe with you that will help you the next time your child or loved one suffers from a sore throat. I also have a big announcement to share! Are you ready?

As a sneak peek into this new course and the type of content you’ll find there, here is a tried-and-true recipe to make and stock in your wellness cabinet so you’re prepared the next time your little one comes down with a sore throat.

Cinn-a-Mint Marshmallow Sore Throat Pastilles
From Herbal Academy’s Holistic Herbal Care for Kids Course

When your child has a sore throat, it’s great to have something nice and soothing on hand to coat the throat’s tissues. These easy-to-make pastilles come together quickly and last quite a long time. They should be sucked on slowly so the demulcent qualities of cinnamon and marshmallow touch every inch of that painful throat.

Ingredients

¼ cup cinnamon (Cinnamomum spp.) bark, powdered
¼ cup marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) root, powdered
Raw honey
⅛ cup peppermint (Mentha x piperita) leaf, powdered

Directions

  • Combine the cinnamon and marshmallow powder in a bowl.
  • Mix a small amount of raw honey into the powder, adding more honey as needed to create a dough-like consistency that will hold its shape when rolled into a ball.
  • Add peppermint powder to a separate bowl and set aside.
  • Pinch off small pieces of dough and roll them into dime-sized balls. Place the balls in the bowl of peppermint powder and give the bowl a gentle wiggle to coat the balls with the powder.
  • Transfer the finished pastilles to an airtight storage container along with a bit of peppermint powder to keep them from sticking together. Label and store in a cool, dark location for up to 6 months.
  • Enjoy one pastille as often as needed. For younger children, cut into smaller pieces for chewing.
