Lonesome Dove and back to the cookbook
This week I’m back to working on the new cookbook. We had some nice rains this weekend. This is the first summer in years that we’ve had rain throughout the Spring and Summer. Usually by now, the grass is brown and the elm tree leaves are brittle and falling at the merest breeze. It’s amazing to still have green grass.
I spent the weekend catching up on work and watching the mini-series Lonesome Dove. I think this is one of the absolute best of all western movies and novels.
I read the book, by Larry McMurtry, a few years after it was published and the following year watched the mini-series when it came out. I loved both the book and the TV series.
The story is about two retired Texas Rangers, Woodrow F. Call (played by Tommy Lee Jones) and Augustus McCrae (Robert Duvall) and their cowboys who drive a cattle herd from Lonesome Dove, Texas to Montana. Along the way they encounter stampedes, dust storms, and Indian battles.
The film stayed consistent with the details in the book and brought the representation of the old West to life by the actors who were dedicated to staying faithful to the novel.
Having grown up on a ranch, rewatching the series brought back memories of my own time riding horses, rounding up the herd for branding, and months of wintering on horseback checking and feeding cattle.
If you enjoy reading about the Old West, read or watch Lonesome Dove. Check out the trailer below:
Off to make a batch of chocolate chip cookies. Going through all these recipes is making me hungry!
Until tomorrow . . .
