Homemade Cranberry Sauce with a Pinch of Cinnamon and Nutmeg
Recipe from Favorite Side Dishes for Thanksgiving—It’s Not All About the Turkey!
Prep: 5 min Cook: 10 min Serves: 10
Ingredients
12 oz whole fresh cranberries
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup orange juice
Pinch of cinnamon
Pinch of nutmeg
1 tsp vanilla extract
Orange zest
Directions
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, dissolve sugar in the orange juice. Stir in the cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.
- Add the cranberries and cook while stirring, until they start to pop, about 10 minutes. Cook and stir occasionally until it thickens, turns dark red, and all the cranberries have popped. It needs to be thick like a sauce.
- Remove from heat. Pour the sauce into a bowl and set aside to continue to thicken as it cools.
- Serve with a little zest of orange peel on top, if desired.
Tip!
If you want the cranberry sauce less chunky, use a potato masher and mash to desired texture.
