Journal Entry #18—The Duffer Brothers MasterClass, Stranger Things, and Independence Day

This weekend we had a blast watching The Duffer Brothers MasterClass: The Duffer Brothers Teach Developing an Original TV Series. Then we rounded it off with Stranger Things Season 4, Independence Day, and The Patriot.

My daughter is working on her novels and she loves to pick apart the movies we watch for character development, storylines, plot holes, worldbuilding, and all the other details that make for great storytelling.

I keep a journal every day and write non-fiction. So, even though she writes fiction and I write nonfiction, we like to watch these writing videos together and bounce ideas off each other. We had a lot of fun finishing Season 4 of Stranger Things, and then turned on the MasterClass with the Duffer Brothers and watched how they came up with all of their ideas for the movie.

It was interesting seeing it from the perspective of writing the screenplay for Stranger Things, how they developed the story through the characters and where they got their ideas from, and worldbuilding the Upside Down. They show you how to take the idea, put it into an outline and a script, and then how to sell that script.

We both got a lot of ideas on how to improve our own writing and methods for outlining that will be helpful to adapt to what we each write. We both tend to get bogged down in the middle of our books and seeing how the Duffer Brothers interwove their characters and their storylines will be something to emulate with our own work.

If you are a writer, you should definitely watch the Matt and Ross Duffer Brothers’ MasterClass.

We finished up the weekend watching Independence Day with Will Smith, a family tradition in our household. And also The Patriot. We enjoyed the fireworks, although the dogs did not. We celebrated with BBQ roast beef, potato salad, and chocolate pudding.

Now, back to work.
